BF 1 supports native controllers just like BF4, though performance might differ. If you have experience with an Xbox One controller, let me know how it feels. I’m not concerned about the challenge, just curious about the experience.

It should work without any problems as long as your controller is functioning. If it's wireless, make sure you have the USB adapter. Otherwise, you might face issues. Be careful, or you could encounter problems.

Stick with kb and mouse, progress will come in a few weeks. It takes months to reach decent levels for newcomers, but it’s far more valuable than playing on a controller just to spawn and die. There’s no other way to enjoy FPS on PC at the moment. For singleplayer, I don’t mind the tools, but MP is a waste of time unless you’re a pilot.

I usually grab my Xbox One pad whenever I travel and rely on keyboard/mouse for ground gameplay. The system instantly adapts when you press a button or move the stick on the pad (and reverses when you click or press a key), suggesting built-in controller compatibility. I haven’t faced any problems with it. Even if it feels a bit off at first, I think investing time in mastering keyboard + mouse during infantry missions could really boost your performance. Your choice.

In the future I plan to do, currently my PC is linked to the TV upstairs and functions like an OP console.

KB/M works well in flight as well, offering greater accuracy.
