Hello, I’m seeking guidance on setting up a reliable and adaptable home network using OPNsense. I aim to separate my smart devices and create a future-proof system with plenty of customization options—like routing traffic through a VPN or blocking ads. Here’s what I have in mind:

- 1 Gbps home internet connection (UK)
- Budget around £800
- Network includes smart devices, a PC, and an unRAID server with dual 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports
- Currently using four Ethernet cables on my ISP router
- Goal is a future-proof setup, ideally aiming for 10 Gbps, though most setups seem to be around 2.5 Gbps unless upgraded or built from scratch
- Not planning to purchase another PC
- Looking for a low-profile, silent device with no built-in WiFi—something like the Protectli 6-Port Firewall example on Amazon
- Will use my ISP router in bridged mode, so I need a WAN port
- Prefer a router with strong CPU and ample RAM, even if it’s primarily a router
- Consider adding a managed switch later for expansion
- Want a WiFi 6E mesh system for long-term use, good coverage, and file transfers to the unRAID server or streaming
- Think one mesh unit is sufficient now, though I’m open to more if needed

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I use PFSense and UniFi devices. The AP will work well, just configure the VLANs and create an IoT subnet. Assign a unique IoT network to that VLAN only. Block traffic between subnets at the firewall, and you’ll have a separate SSID for IoT devices.
