Suggestions for my new CPU? :D
PC specifications: CPU - Ryzen 5 1600, GPU - GTX 1060, 6GB RAM, Motherboard - ASUS ROG Strix B-350F, PSU - Corsair CX 550M, RAM - 16GB Dual Channel, 2100 MHz. I’m considering a CPU upgrade to something more powerful since my main game, Dota 2, is demanding on the processor. If I also want to improve my GPU, I’ll need a stronger CPU to keep performance stable. I’ve looked into options and decided on the Ryzen 7 2700X for the upgrade. I aim to run Dota 2 at 200+ FPS from start to finish, enjoy other games at higher settings without frame drops. Please let me know if I missed anything or if this setup won’t work with my current system. Thank you!
the actual performance gap between a 1600 and a 2700x is just around 10%, extra cores won’t greatly boost gaming. 6 cores still covers most needs. aiming for high frames matters only when your screen matches it. with a 1080p 240hz setup, focus on the top single-core CPU and the best GPU you can buy—like a 3070 or higher.
your screen can only show frames it can refresh quickly, like 200fps on a 60hz monitor. this offers some advantages, but you won’t notice most details. your frame rates will be impressive, though you’ll still see only 60fps. gaming at 1080p with 240fps puts a massive strain on both the CPU and GPU. running games at 1080p 240fps uses the same number of pixels as playing at 4k 60fps—an enormous amount!
It depends on your specific situation. Upgrading your monitor might be more practical if performance issues are coming from the display, while a CPU upgrade could be necessary if you're experiencing overall system slowdowns. Consider testing both options before deciding.
If you're looking for a smoother visual experience at higher frame rates, it's possible—but your equipment will still set the boundaries. High refresh gaming can be costly to pursue. I'm not a regular Dota player, but I don't think it would really help. It's not a game that needs super-fast reactions from my side.
Your existing configuration should support the 240Hz monitor, but verify compatibility settings and refresh rates.
