I recently purchased a gaming computer for my daughter, and as someone with no prior experience, I’m looking to improve its performance. It currently features a Q6600 processor, an Intel quad chipset, 4GB of DDR2 memory, and a Palite 710 graphics card. Any suggestions on how to upgrade it would be greatly appreciated.
That port is incompatible with any processors released within the past decade; it’s quite outdated. It performed adequately when it was new, however, those times have passed. Installing a more powerful graphics card might provide some improvement. Nevertheless, a system upgrade (CPU/motherboard/memory) is necessary to achieve acceptable frame rates in contemporary games.
Is it possible to replace the processor on that motherboard? I purchased the computer for a relatively low price, around £160, and my intention was simply to improve its performance. It’s a recent purchase, we are both avid PlayStation 4 gamers, and we should have consulted with others before making this purchase. My daughter and I didn't fully grasp how intricate this technology is.
Considering your current motherboard, it’s difficult to determine compatible CPUs. Even previous-generation quad-core processors weren’t noticeably superior to the Q6600. Achieving a substantially improved processor requires replacing the entire system – including the CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

Thank you all, I appreciate your input. If I were to replace those components, could you offer any suggestions? I’ve been researching component changes through some online videos. Where do we stand on budget? And what case/chassis are you utilizing – please specify the manufacturer and model number of your power supply?
The GT710 is a basic graphics card.
For fast-paced games, a more powerful graphics card is recommended.
A GT1030 or GTX1050 doesn’t require additional power and operates using the motherboard's slot power supply.
These cards can be easily transferred to a system with a more robust power supply unit.
To test it out, play your games while reducing the resolution and special effects.
A rise in frames per second suggests your central processing unit is capable of handling a superior graphics setup.
If frame rates remain unchanged, you are probably limited by the CPU.
If you require greater processor performance, consider investing around $250 for an entry-level G5600, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and an LGA1151 300 series motherboard.
My spouse has allotted us a £100 every two weeks for spare components, and I’m currently working shifts. Upon my return home tomorrow, I will examine the remaining parts and provide a more detailed inventory of their contents.
