I own an older HP Pavilion laptop (Windows 8.1, i5 processor, 12GB RAM, 500GB SSD, four USB-2 ports). I mainly use it as a compact audio/sound system for recording simple music, electronic drums, and streaming services like Spotify. Generally, it works well when everything is in order. However, I’ve noticed some occasional issues such as USB conflicts and WiFi problems. That’s why I’m thinking about buying a new one.

My main concern is whether the new laptop will provide sufficient USB ports. Right now I have six, including two audio interfaces, two webcams, a MiDi cable, an external WiFi adapter, a 4-port USB-2 extension unit, and a few small mixers. Most modern laptops no longer offer multiple USB ports, headphone/mic jacks, or even power inputs—everything should be handled through a USB-C port extension device.

Given my limited workspace, I’d prefer a smaller machine—likely 13-inch or a compact 15-inch—running Windows 10 (or 8.1 would suffice). I’m budgeting around $800 and am open to a used unit. I’m wondering if any of these options can support running all my peripherals via an upgraded USB-C extender?

Any advice on laptops or specific USB extension solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve K.

Are there particular grounds to believe certain parts of your equipment are faulty instead of problems with the software?
Is there a possibility you haven’t installed Windows 10 on the existing devices?
Upgrading might be fine for comfort, but I’m curious about its need.

Thank you Lafong for your prompt reply and concern.
I own other more recent laptops such as Dell XPS13 with an i7 processor, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD, and only two USB ports. I installed all the software on this machine without issues. However, coordinating all my devices to run at the same time remains a bit difficult.
I did set up Windows 10 on the HP, but it actually seemed to create more complications (though I’m not sure what exactly caused it). Therefore, I reinstalled Windows 8, which also proved challenging.
I replaced the internal WiFi/BT adapter in the HP twice; it functioned properly for a short period before losing internet access (though it still connected locally). Now I rely on an external USB WiFi dongle, which works well.
With all these troubles, I thought it might be time to upgrade and move to something more recent. Perhaps I’ll attempt another Windows 10 installation, as most of us have more time than money.
