Suddenly game frames per second going down everywhere?
Hey, I have a weird problem that I can't figure out why it's happening. A long time ago I updated my BIOS and then games started acting bad because of that. Later, Windows 10 had some updates that made things worse so I decided to make a fresh install of Windows and update my BIOS one more time to the newest version. After all those changes, my game FPS went back up to normal and I didn't have any performance issues at first. For example, Valorant would drop down to 140 frames per second, but after the BIOS upgrade and the new Windows install, it went back up to about 200 just like before. But here is the problem: a couple of weeks later, even though everything was fine again, FPS started dropping in some games. It used to go way down to 140 for a while but then it stayed okay until suddenly losing frames again. I'm seeing this drop between 30 and 50 FPS on many games I play like Valorant. Even though the GPU isn't running at 100% and the CPU is also never hot or getting stuck, my temps are normal so that's not causing it either. It feels really strange because losing a lot of frames after being fine for weeks. My specs include an R5 1600 processor with a RX580 card (which I think is an 8G Ripjaws 2x4GB card) on an Asus B350-f motherboard, and I use a Seasonic s12II PSU that can handle my power needs.
Did you see if your RAM is full? I can think that after installing all those programs, 8GB might run out fast with modern games and apps, especially when you start a new Windows install. Then you'll use way less memory than later on, depending on how many other apps are running in the background. Have you looked at the priority settings for your games?
Hi Nate, here is an example with Valorant: it takes about 5 to 6GB of RAM. Like I said, it used to run fine. But something made a big difference; if you turn down your graphics, you get way more frames per second in most games instead of losing around 40 to 50 fps just like that. Honestly, I can't figure out exactly what is causing this problem.
I'm not an expert and I have no idea why your frame rate (fps) is dropping. From my own experience, I have a good PC too, but one time had an issue where games would suddenly slow down without any real reason. I didn't change settings or install new apps before this happened either. I looked online for fixes like cleaning the hardware, updating drivers, resetting my computer to save my files, scanning it for viruses and malware, etc., but none of those worked until I was about to reset or reinstall my operating system all over again. That's when I found my fix by pure luck. All I did was move my USB headset from one port to another, not sure why (I got frustrated and gave up a lot at that point) but after running a few final tests before resetting everything worked great again, my lost fps are back. To sum it all up: the cause could be anything but if you happen to have a similar problem in the future, try narrowing things down and finding out why; then you'll know what to do next time. =)
Yeah, just weird because everything worked fine after I updated my BIOS, then went back to dropping FPS. I actually did a full Windows reinstall at the same time, but nothing important happened between the "normal" FPS and that sudden drop. NOTE: My PC crashed once and stuck in POST with an orange light flashing. It got bad enough that I had to shut it down and restart. Everything was fine after that reboot, and then my FPS started dropping again. I think this is why they went from normal FPS to no FPS right away before the BIOS update. And I'm pretty sure something like this happened too before the update when every game froze as well. Why would my computer do that? Why did it work fine after a BIOS update but now not working at all?
