what are you using it for? if it's primarily gaming in 4K then just get a 3900x as it'll be the same as a 9900/10900k in 4k gaming, but better for other things if youre gaming in 1080/1440p and always want 144+ fps then i'd probably say get a 9900k or just wait for a 10900

We shouldn't hold off just yet. It looks like 10900k is essentially the same as 9900k with more cores, so we can estimate the improvement from 8700k to 9900k and use that for the 9900k numbers—though the actual gain seems minimal, especially for gaming. Regarding the 4th generation Ryzen, we haven't seen any leaks yet, and even the reported 15% boost isn't significant. You can keep an eye on things, but if your setup isn't strong enough, I won't wait.

My budget is tight, so I focus on value and longevity. I mainly game 80-85% of the time, with occasional use for flight and racing sims, plus video/photo editing when freelancing. I also have an RTX 2080 from my previous build that’s underutilized and will stay in it until Ampere.

Threadrippers are designed for processing data and virtual machines, not for gaming. Intel is preferable for overclocking, though only CPUs with 'k' in their name aren't restricted. Intel isn't always the more affordable choice (like comparing an i9 900k versus a R9 3900x); the i9 costs more and has fewer cores and threads. Having more cores and threads doesn’t guarantee better performance (e.g., R3 3300X to i7 700K).

Ok so the vibe I’m getting is both AMD and Intel will be - for gaming at least (I play at 3440x1440 and sometimes 4K on my TV) - a little to negligible performance change for gaming with their new and upcoming launches (zen 3 / 10th gen) and that Intel can OC better and is better for just gaming compared to AMD which is better for everything else. If I go on the basis that I’m going to prioritise gaming performance as it’s what I do most, waiting for the 10900k as originally planned may be my ideal path to go down? Or perhaps AMD with X570 so I have the freedom to go to zen 3 (like I could rocket lake on LGA1200) should it be better? Afraid I’m still a little torn.
