Hello, welcome! I’m excited you’re eager to learn. Please be gentle if I ask something simple. Your current setup includes 3400G + B550 Gaming x v2 Gigabyte and 4400 16GB RAM (VIPER). You’re aiming to upgrade your CPU for the AM4 board and want to make the most of your 4400RAM system, which often struggles above 3200 CL 14 and crashes. You’re considering options like the 5600, 5700X (for budget), or the 5800X3D to boost performance without switching to AM5. I’d love any advice you can offer. Looking forward to your suggestions! Also, you mentioned planning a 4K 144Hz monitor in the future—currently you have a 1080p 170Hz MSI 24-inch. Thanks a lot!

I understand, but it really varies with the cost. They're almost identical in price so it's not a good deal. @SirInvoker also note you won't achieve 4400mhz on any AMD AM4 processor unless you're very skilled. It functions just okay; I used the same setup before. I tried it at 3600@CL15. I recommend upgrading to a new board, though – 32gb is a solid investment. Many titles gain from this upgrade and the larger memory capacity will boost performance. 3200/3600mhz CL16 works just fine, particularly for the 5800X3D, since its 3D V-cache limits gains from faster RAM compared to regular chips.

Cezzane apus will handle over 4600+ dual ranks smoothly in a 1:1 setup, so a single rank at 4400MHz shouldn’t cause problems. The same applies to Matisse (zen2) and Vermeer (zen3), though they may only support 2:1 or experience clock frequency desync, keeping them around 4600-4800 depending on your IMCC. For another kit, opt for a used 3200C14 and install it since it’s reliable. Assuming you don’t need an APU, the chances of issues are low. If you want something new, the 5700X3D is available at around $50 for a 2x16 kit, though it may run at 3800MHz with tighter memory. Used options in the 5800X3D range can be found for $200-250 depending on your market. You can use a 3200C14 or similar and stick to 3800MHz with tight subs, which most daisy chain boards support under 4000MHz. Performance will likely remain minimal even with faster dies, but it should cost less than the new 50$ for a 2x16 kit, especially if you’re choosing a CPU. The 16-16-16-16 configuration is the best bet for stability.

Of course, the APUs are there too.

The CPUs are also not suitable—they’re likely too slow to show any real performance gain over 3800/4000 units and can’t compete with dual-rank 3800/4000 at 1:1. The APU handles high-frequency use well, but you won’t want four sticks running; a solid PCB on the RAM side plus a decent board would be better if you aim for 4600+ performance.

He uses a 4400 processor with specific memory timings, but it won't function properly on an AM4 CPU.

Various options exist, making direct comparisons difficult. The 4400 model reflects expectations for the 10th generation at around 1.45V VCC and I/O, though higher speeds might be possible depending on the specific chip. The 11th generation appears to be a regression compared to earlier models, with gear 1 capable of roughly 4000-4200. Uncertainty remains about the 12th, 13th, and 14th generations, which should likely fall between 4200-4500. For APUs like Zen2/3, shared I/O dies suggest similar capabilities around 3800-4000 in ideal conditions, while 1:1 FCLK is about 4800-5200, and desync FCLK aligns with AMD's 2nd generation specs.

uncertain about VCCSA/IO, didn't modify it but the RAM operates at 1.5V

Thanks! I'm considering a used model around 5700XT or 6750XT. No GPU needed at the moment—I'm thinking about purchasing one.
