I encountered an unusual setup. I upgraded a used pre-built unit for gaming purposes, but it overheated quickly. The GPU was generating excessive heat due to poor ventilation in the side panel. I created a DIY cooling solution using a rear exhaust and side fans powered by PWM signals from the CPU fan header. This approach worked temporarily for a few months.
However, I received a notification from Intel Rapid Storage indicating my HDD had been disconnected. Initially, I thought it was related to RSE, but since I wasn’t managing enterprise systems or using Octane, I removed it. The issue persisted—rebooting took unusually long, and the system would freeze on booting with rotating circles. Eventually, it booted but the drive disappeared from Disk Manager.
When I disconnected the drive, Windows booted instantly, suggesting the drive was dead. I tried a backup USB drive, which worked without issues. I also tested using an old 2.5-inch HDD, which functioned properly. This led me to suspect that the fans might be drawing too much power and potentially damaging the drive, even if it seemed normal before.
There appears to be no clear connection between the fans and the HDD’s functionality. The single wire I used for PWM control didn’t seem to cause a short. Could this setup be affecting the drive in an unexpected way? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.
It might not be built for the load you're using. It seems unusual, but perhaps you pushed the power supply too hard and now it's having trouble supporting everything connected. Although it isn't affecting the GPU, it's possible the PSU wiring is different—maybe the SATA power is on a separate voltage rail. Would it help to use a splitter so all fans share the same connector? Fan connectors typically handle at least 1A, so simply add their ratings together to check if they stay under that total.
The PSU provides 825 watts, and I conducted multiple OCCT power tests while optimizing my fan setup. The only missing parts were the HDD, RAM, optical drive, four RAM modules, all fans, and the GPU. During these tests, I never encountered any problems. I didn't have a splitter for the side fans because each front fan draws about 0.95 amps. Even though I'm unsure of the amperage for proprietary fan ports, since standard ports are rated at 1 amp, it's reasonable to assume they're similar. I avoided drawing power from the front fan headers because I had minimal headroom—only around 0.05 amps—and chose to power them through SATA instead. I powered the rear fan from the CPU cooler header because its draw was roughly 0.60 amps, leaving plenty of margin. The case was built to depend heavily on the three front fans for airflow, which helped prevent hotspots behind the CPU cooler.
