You can halt the installer and security tools, though they likely won’t terminate the system process. A restart might help reduce heavy drive usage.

Did you turn off the unnecessary applications in the startup section of msconfig so they launch only when needed? If they’re safe, that should work perfectly. For regular automatic updates, simply turn off the update feature within each program.
