It's fine if you copy files from your NAS or external HDD into the SteamAPPS/common/ directory for the game you plan to play. This helps you save costs and use a smaller SSD.

Sure, I can help with that. Just let me know if you'd like me to copy them to your NAS and play them back.

I understand, I need to rephrase this clearly. I plan to save all the game files to an external storage device and then move them to a location like steamapps/common/ when I want to play them. This way, they'll be accessed from the SSD for faster performance.

Wouldn't it be better to access them directly from the external storage? I think repeatedly transferring games to your SSD each time would take too much effort.

Your external drive is significantly slower compared to your SSD. You mainly use it for a few games that are typically stored on the SSD, about 90% of the time. This setup would suit games you play infrequently, while keeping the storage dedicated to programs.

It would shorten their lifespan and it might be faster to stay on the NAS and manage them from there.

This would hold up as long as I receive my external HDD, which should handle games like BF4 smoothly despite the slow performance of my current HDD. Once it arrives, I’ll be ready for faster load times.

@tmcclelland455 has the correct point. Those writes will eventually damage the SSD. It would be easier if you could adjust the installation directory in Steam settings, avoiding the need to transfer files back and forth.

I understand this setup. You can create several library spots, and the games will automatically use the Steam installation path, though you have the option to pick a different one each time you install a title.

I'll follow that approach. The moment I read a QR code, I get a Rick Roll reaction :'(
