STEAM: Tips for lowering laptop chassis temperature on Windows 11 24H2
I keep things straightforward and brief because I’ve owned this laptop for about 4 to 5 years, and I was disappointed with the performance of this Asus model. It seems the Steam client uses a lot of airflow from the chassis, but the temperatures are still okay. This information can be useful.
Adding a laptop fan also makes a difference.
1. Open or log into Steam.
2. Launch Task Manager.
3. Locate the small icon next to the Steam Client in the task manager window (this shows details and reveals that Steam is the main process).
4. You’ll notice many SteamWebHelpers listed. Steam sometimes needs assistance for various reasons I’m not sure about.
5. Right-click several of these WebHelpers and select "Efficiency Mode".
6. Apply this setting to all sub-processes.
BUT
you must keep one sub-process disabled with Efficiency Mode; otherwise, Steam will log you out.
This adjustment significantly reduced the chassis heat buildup—no exaggeration. I was worried about a hardware issue with my expensive laptop, but this resolved the problem. Imagine waking up to find Steam heating up the top of your laptop, even where it shouldn’t, and feeling your thumbs only slightly warm. This improved both the durability of the chassis and keyboard lighting, plus it enhances your overall experience.
You should repeat this every time you start Steam, and it also helps cool the power connector area where you connect your AC cable. That’s a big plus.
Take care
Asus laptop: what is the make, model, and configuration?
Did you just begin using Steam? That means there were no heat issues before. Is that right?
Which sub-processes (SteamWebHelpers) were you actually turning on for Efficiency Mode?
Why would Steam need to log you out if you enabled all of them in Efficiency Mode?
Once activated, I wouldn’t expect the system to turn those settings off again, would it?
The chassis heating could be caused by factors other than Steam. More details are needed.
