Steam Link opinions?
I've been using my Steam link for about four months now. Given the price, especially since I got it for free by selling some CSGO items, it's hard to beat. Mostly I use it to browse in Firefox. You can add any app (as long as it runs one process) to your library and stream it through the Steam link. Chrome doesn't perform well, but Firefox works perfectly. The streaming quality is excellent, and the delay is minimal. Overall, for around $50, it was definitely worth it.
Thank you for your message. I enjoy exploring streaming games without diving into intense multiplayer sessions. I’m looking for story-driven titles to enjoy, especially those that don’t require heavy competitive play. I’m also considering a Steam controller for better immersion.
Like I said, latency and quality are surprisingly good. Heres a tip: set the stream settings to fast, and it will speed things up a lot. I changed the setting to fast, and didn't at all notice a difference in quality, but delay was much improved. Do keep in mind that I am using ethernet. Your results will vary with wifi. I just use a mouse and keyboard with the steam link. Though theoretically you could use a bluetooth controller like the sony controller. I have not tested any controllers with the steam link, but they should work just fine. I see the steam controller as something more for novelty than actual gaming purposes. I would say that it is unnecessary, but I have never even handled one, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
It's great to hear you're considering this! We already have a solid gigabit connection at home, so I thought about setting up a cable from the loft to the bedroom. I'm curious about the steam controller too—most people don't own one, which is why I'm eager to try it myself. I'm ready to be a tester!
Interesting! What stands out is that the touch pads function more like laptop-style touchpads than joystick-like controls. It feels like a lot of effort for my thumbs to perform basic actions like turning around. Right now I'm using an iPad Mini, so maybe my earlier comment was a bit off.
I believe the main point for me is that even though it won’t match the accuracy of a keyboard and mouse, it should still perform better than a typical Xbox controller for fast-paced games. That’s what caught my attention most. I don’t have any thoughts about the iPad Mini since I haven’t tried one! haha
I was just mentioning the iPad Mini due to how much typing it requires on the touchscreen.
I favor the Xbox pad for FPS games instead of the Steam controller, though the link is excellent.
You might need to use a wireless 360 pad with the adapter for Windows instead. It seems more affordable. I've also learned that the Xbox One controller doesn't work wirelessly with it, is that accurate?
