Hey everyone! My brother came over to visit. We're looking for a free multiplayer FPS game to play together. A few people recommended some titles on Steam that I haven't used before. So I and my brother created an account and installed the Steam software. The next step was connecting as friends in Steam so we could find each other and start playing. This was quite surprising—Steam seemed really excited about us joining! But I noticed it costs $5 to become a friend.

You can always send invites no matter what... I wasn't sure this was possible, but it's usually not a big deal for most people.

This measure is in place to stop spam bots and reduce marketplace fraud, which remains a concern. It’s reasonable from my perspective.

Creating an open profile will display a join game button even if you don’t become friends.

We created an account on a gaming site to enjoy playing together, but we’re having trouble locating each other. Is this normal?

It’s likely you can locate each other without joining the friend list or sending invites. Messaging should remain functional, so simply tap the message option to request an invite.

Many solutions exist to bypass these restrictions with minimal effort. This approach is quite feasible and represents a simple way to proceed compared to other anti-spam methods.

The invitation section was much simpler with Steam's organization features.

Absolutely; charging a $5 fee stops spam bots from overwhelming their systems. (Though it might not be effective, I'm not going to discuss that.)

This appears to be an unusual action, likely intended only for inclusion in a social circle.
