Steam feels extremely old-fashioned today.
Essentially the attitude is one of complacency. Steam dominates because it’s the leading title in the market. Early on, they gained an advantage, leaving competitors struggling to keep up. Platforms like Battlenet, Origin and similar services are useful but limited compared to the full range of options. While GOG exists, it doesn’t pose a serious threat at the moment. The same principle applies to Intel’s CPU a year ago—until AMD entered the scene and forced Intel to invest in more substantial upgrades.
I understand your perspective on point 4. The goal of sales often involves encouraging quick purchases. When a trailer displays the HUD and similar features, some viewers might think, "It seems too complicated."
I'm surprised that someone else besides me has courage to show critique towards Steam. Usually its Origin which gets the hate while Steam hasn't shown anything major for years. Well, if we can count in ability to request refund. Which Origin had before Steam anyway... Considering Origin has been around for 6 years and Steam double that. Steam main UI has been same since 2007/8. They have big picture mode and store has gotten rewamp (which imo is worse than what it was before). But there's much room for improvements.
Steam probably runs an older version of Chromium. The main interface lacks tabbed browsing, though it opens new windows when you click areas. The overlay includes tabs, but I don’t recognize the “Details” page you mentioned. Regarding tags, community-created ones might not align with your intentions and could be problematic. You can categorize games by multiple types, which is a recent improvement. The core issue seems to lie in how developers present information, suggesting it’s more about marketing than clarity. Overall, I’d like to know exactly what changes you’d prefer.
Have you ever come across that phrase? It means if something works fine, don’t try to change it. Steam isn’t broken, so there’s no need to fix it. Yes, it might seem old-fashioned, but it still outperforms what M$ and Sony managed with their consoles. Particularly if you own a bigger collection... And that’s the key point. They also need to avoid introducing any security weaknesses. That would be disastrous for them, and that’s the most critical issue—security. But you won’t see or feel it.
Websites such as GOG have become increasingly popular recently, especially compared to Steam. I tend to prefer purchasing most upcoming titles from GOG just to avoid DRM restrictions. Steam is evolving, but it remains straightforward. Many dislike changes—especially frequent ones like the recent YouTube layout updates.
I believe steam stands out more than its competitors like origins and uplay, not only because of its extensive game collection but also because of its user-friendly and seamless experience. The large library along with significant sales during special events make it an attractive option for gamers looking to purchase games at reduced prices.
