They're referring to assigning an internal IP address for the remote device. The server's internal IP must be routed through the firewall of the router.

Yes, that's correct... assigning an internal IP address is the simpler aspect. You can configure it directly on the device or through the router settings. The more challenging part is determining the public IP address when you attempt to connect remotely to the device.
