Took me a full night to understand this. The steps are straightforward, but many overlook it. My setup includes an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X with 8 cores, running at 3.40 GHz. I have 64 GB of RAM (63.9 GB available). The system runs a 64-bit OS with an x64-based GPU—ASUS RX-5500XT, 8 GB NVMe, using HC-HES. When I turned off the CSM, my NVMe drive didn’t appear as a boot option, just an OS selector. Booting the machine caused it to power cycle until I saw the American Megatrends screen. I thought my CMOS battery was dead, but it wasn’t. The fix came when I adjusted the CSM settings: turned it on, booted again, then disabled CSM and set the NVMe drive as the first boot option. Rebooted, and it worked. Just repeat this when changing the PSU power switch. Remember, this method won’t work on other MOBO models. I haven’t tried it before, but ASUS recommends PrimoCache. It increased my SEQ from 7 GB to nearly 20 GB, and write speeds jumped from 3 GB to over 23 GB. Everything loads quickly—code runs almost instantly. I’m not a fan of the manufacturer, but it’s effective. Fast forward to the next step.

Sure, I've refreshed the bios and removed the CMOS battery reference.

it its updated through Armory Crate bios version 3002 and cmos batt is good, i guess my board requires csm for nvme boot. I installed windows on it with no other drive in place. it works better than ever now since i did that workaround. Ive been reading that its a bug but thats it. as long as nvme support is enabled it shouldnt matter if csm is on or not

If the data resides in MBR, converting it to GPT could also be beneficial.

I’m sorry about the issue. After checking, I found a newer BIOS version. The Armory crate doesn’t have it, so I had to download the updated BIOS and use ezflash. It’s currently updating and should resolve the problem. Hopefully this fixes it. It’s working on it now to see if it helps.

It didn’t work. I had to use the same workaround, and I replaced the CMOS batteries so it wasn’t an issue

Did you verify the fresh battery prior to installation? I've encountered several units labeled "new" that functioned properly only at 3 volts.

I don’t have anything to evaluate. I’ll start using the RTX 3060 tomorrow, which means I won’t run into this issue again.

Are you using a UEFI or legacy installation? Without CSM, you're limited to UEFI boot and can only access the OS itself, not external drives. This setup aligns with your expectations. I'd avoid enabling RAM caching since it skips the OS's synchronization settings, which could risk data loss if the system misinterprets writes.
