Starting from a fresh SSD requires proper setup and configuration.
You can keep your old HDD intact after installing a new SSD. Once you boot from the SSD, your HDD will retain all your previous data and function properly. Moving files like games between the drives should be straightforward.
You were thinking about cloning it over. I was planning to do that, but the instructions mentioned I couldn’t just copy the OS alone—I’d have to relocate everything. I also have many misc files that would be tedious to transfer back to my SSD since they wouldn’t fit on the eMMC. I ended up using a Samsung 860 EVO with 500GB storage.
It depends on how customized your setup is. If you have many apps, settings, save games, plugins, and have spent years fine-tuning your system, cloning the drive might be a better choice. It can be time-consuming, but it ensures no configurations or registrations are missed.
If your system is simple with few game-related settings and everything is standard, cloning and moving files could take too long, and installing anew might be quicker. Both methods work well—pick the one that suits your time.
Cloning is a bit more involved than starting fresh from scratch (I suggest using a bootable USB with Macrium Reflect), but it keeps everything running smoothly afterward. Installing at the beginning is simpler initially, but you’ll need to install drivers and programs yourself, which can be challenging if you’re not experienced.
