Hello, my brother recently purchased some PC components. I put together most of the setup, but he attached the motherboard to the case first and then added the standoffs through the holes in the motherboards before securing it. When I checked, the gap between the motherboard and the case was almost touching. After booting up the PC and loading Windows, everything worked perfectly. The motherboard looks good and everything functions properly. If I leave it like this, will there be any issues? So far, not at all, and a full day has passed without problems.
He overlooked adjusting the mounting points prior to putting in the motherboard. To achieve optimal outcomes, it’s best to take the board out and correct the alignment. Keeping it in might only escalate problems later on. It’s a straightforward task taking about 10 to 20 minutes.
You can't tweak motherboard standoffs—just install and leave them as is. It’s a set distance. Another major issue with building a PC is the lack of pre-installed cases; there’s no logical reason they’re missing. It’s frustrating for manufacturers to charge extra just to make this difficult. My NZXT case I purchased recently didn’t include standoffs at all, even if some were already set. So if you attempt an MATX board installation, be prepared—eventually I had to return it. I’m sorry for the hassle, but this is clearly not what happened.
I realize I should have chosen a different term for moving the standoffs so the motherboard fits properly in the tray. The issue seems to be that the motherboard was fully inserted into one or two positions without adjusting the standoffs first. I apologize for any confusion this caused, and I’m just as puzzled by how others describe their setup challenges.
Well, the thing is that the motherboard is not actually all the way down. It still has space between the case and the motherboard and the inputs for the usbs, ethernet, hdmi etc fit perfectly. What I am trying to say is that when my brother added the motherboard, the motherboard still held space between the case and itself before he even added the standoffs. The box included only 3 standoffs. So the motherboard was not touching the case from the beginning of the whole story.
Your setup already had some mounting points set up, so you just needed to add the rest based on your motherboard. If you missed installing the standoffs, they probably won’t fit after the board is seated. It’s good that you’re careful about not damaging the board while installing.
I believe I didn’t do it because I checked it and there was just enough room before he added the 3 standoffs. Even after they were placed, the motherboard stayed firmly in place, not wobbling or shifting. In other words, it wasn’t unstable. From the moment we put the board in the case, there was still a gap of about an inch. Since then, the PC has been working perfectly without any power interruptions or issues with the motherboard. I’m hoping some standoffs were already installed. Sorry for my confusing words—I’m still learning and this is my first build. Thanks for your understanding; sorry for the unclear explanation.
