Spent an hour preparing a Win 11 image, using Rufus to make a bootable USB, only to face another failure during the SAFE-OS phase. This time it says “failed during SAFE-OS phase,” which I suspect is due to outdated drivers I’m trying to replace. Now I’m considering a full reformat—hoping the new Windows 11 USB will work. It’s frustrating, but at least I’m learning from each attempt. Thanks for the driver disc, MSI. EDIT 2: Completely reformatted the hard drive again. Starting fresh with Rufus-made Win 11 USB, it shows an error about installation failure—possibly because of corrupted or missing files. I’m really surprised this is happening again.
It seems you're stuck trying to get back online with an outdated Windows 10 installation. You might want to skip the MSI driver disc and go straight to the official Microsoft site to download the latest updates. After that, you can reinstall Windows if needed.
I'm sorry to bump my own thread but there's been a big change: after a lot of effort I was able to get my hands on a disc that brought me up to the newest version of Windows 10 (2H22 or whatever it's called). It's not Win 11 but it will do, because not only is it far newer than the other disc I was using, this one came with the drivers apparently needed for sound, network, etc. Those things are working for me now "out of the box". I can now change my display settings as well, and my Nvidia card is now properly recognized. All entries in device manager - with the exception of the 4 entries in "other devices" - are "filled" by something. My question now is whether I should still bother with my drivers. Things seem to be working fine (other than my primary monitor showing "mode not supported", something else I now have to figure out). I'm honestly pretty terrified about installing drivers now, being that things seem to be working. I tried to download the Intel driver-checking software linked several posts ago but it didn't work, it literally just refused to execute. If the fact that things working is an indication that I no longer need to update drivers, please let me know. Otherwise I can start with the Intel chipset and go from there.
Ensure you're using the newest drivers available on the download site. The chipset is at least sufficient; other details are less important. It's uncertain whether you've recently installed the latest Nvidia driver from their site. If not, you might be using a standard driver via Windows Update, which isn't ideal.
I didn’t install any drivers at all. I haven’t run the Windows update yet either. After spending two days here, and now getting a modern version of Win 10 with sound and recognition for my Nvidia card, I was hesitant to install anything without consulting more experienced people first. Even though everything seems okay now, I still want to install the Intel chipset. This version of Windows is newer than before, could the chipset driver cause any issues? Regarding the Nvidia driver, I don’t remember seeing one on the MSI site. If it’s listed there, I should check an Intel page instead. I tried using their automated driver detection tool, but it didn’t launch. EDIT: I reinstalled the Intel driver detector software the other person suggested earlier, and it didn’t show any additional requirements beyond a graphics and Bluetooth update. No other drivers were offered, and it correctly identified my motherboard and system details. I’m not completely against installing the chipset—though I’m still a bit concerned about doing it—and I just feel more confused than before since everything is finally stable.

For graphics cards, use the latest stable driver from NVIDIA or AMD if available; avoid beta versions unless a fix list mentions a needed patch for your game. I downloaded the Nvidia drivers directly from Nvidia's official site. A fresh release was just out a few days ago. Initially, I searched for a compatible driver on MSI or Intel's pages, but everything seemed fine with Nvidia's offerings. The 22H2 update appeared to cover most issues. Installing it from scratch on a formatted drive restored sound and display functionality, fixing problems that had previously depended on the motherboard disc. While I'm open to other updates, I'm cautious after past failures. The Intel utility might have caused errors, but with all features enabled in 22H2, the correct driver should have been sufficient. This issue was frustrating because my previous monitor had BIOS visibility problems—had to change HDMI ports to see it. Switching straight to Windows resolved the matter. My main monitor, a Samsung plasma, consistently works on a smaller Proscan LCD I bought used, whereas other resolutions on my PC didn't trigger responses. The Samsung display seems especially sensitive. I don’t recall a previous fix, and it functioned properly before I formatted my hard drive last week. I’m currently using only this secondary monitor for testing.
