Hi to everyone. This is my first post, so please be forgiving. I have Intel Core i5 7600K CPU with one SMD capacitor broken off. It happened during transport. I still have tha broken SMD capacitor, so possibly it can be soldered back to place, but the problem is, it also broke off with the tiny piece of copper pads. In one side, there is still left a tinny little fragment of it, so maybe it can work. On the other side it is unfortunately completely missing. But I was wondering, if those capacitors are in parallel, maybe I can solder it to another pad of the same node. Unfortunately I don't know. I am just too afraid to use ohmmetter to figure out which pads are on the same node. I was trying to find some schematics of Intel Core processors, but didn't find anything. Can anyone please help me with this? Do you thing using ohmmeter will damage the CPU?

If you purchased it brand new, I would suggest returning it for an exchange.

A few of these SMD capacitors aren't required for the CPU to operate correctly. If possible, please return it for replacement.

Did you purchase this from eBay? Initiate a return and mention it was damaged—don’t attempt to repair it.

RMA isn't an option. I'll either use it as given or attempt to solder the SMD capacitor back. I can do that, but I need to confirm if I can connect the same node from any other SMD and "skip" the damaged one.

You don’t have any components to solder. The pad is removed from the PCB and remains attached to the bottom of the SMD, meaning it’s either functional or completely failed.

Ensure functionality remains intact, otherwise proceed to randomly scrape near the pad until a trace becomes visible

I obtained another undamaged i5 7600K CPU and used an ohmmeter to discover that the two capacitors were arranged in parallel. I checked the one that failed with an ESR capacitance meter, which confirmed its capacity as 10uF. I then reattached it to the CPU alongside the other capacitor. After running the CPU under heavy stress while monitoring temperature and voltage, it performed perfectly. That’s the final step. Appreciate your feedback.

You could send it to Intel, Gigabyte, or Dell's customer service, or possibly a circuit city support center or repair shop.
