Stalker - Quality Check Any Good?
You're checking out Stalker on GOG. Reviews from GOG say it's solid, while sites like GT have mixed opinions. If you're looking for a good experience, go with GOG—it's praised there. As for the Shadow of Chernobyl connection, most games in the series benefit from it, so it’s usually worth including if you want depth. Whether they stand alone depends on your setup; some run fine without it, but others gain more from it.
Stalker is an excellent series similar to Fallout, but in first-person only. It feels dated and wasn't produced with a huge budget, which makes modding essential for a satisfying experience. I tried Clear Sky and COP and would definitely suggest them.
These titles each stand alone. A free rework of the original Shadow of Chernobyl is called Lost Alpha, though it often has glitches. It’s still playable, though it tends to crash after about an hour before restarting. STALKER offers a challenging experience, similar to playing on a difficult console. The save system is poor and death can be sudden, so save frequently. Exercise caution. When entering the sewer for the first time, you’ll need to flee from whatever you encounter—you’ll learn when and what’s ahead. (Not the invisible threat, but another more intense danger.)
I personally struggled a lot with the STALKER titles—Call of Pripyat and Shadow of Chernobyl. While I’m sure there’s a solid game out there for fans of that style, I found them really tough to grasp and felt like I’d waste too much time trying to understand them.
It's a specialized title, making it tough to know if you'll enjoy it. It works well for some, but not everyone.
The top picks include Shadow of Chernobyl, Call of Pripyat, and the newest mod Lost Alpha. These games effectively guide you on proper first-person gameplay.
