Hello everyone. I switched from an HDD to an SSD (Kingston Hyper x Savage 480GB). For about a month now, my computer has been freezing unexpectedly, forcing me to perform a forced shutdown. I’ve looked up many guides about SSDs and adjusted the power settings to indexing mode. I also checked the BIOS to make sure AHCI was enabled rather than IDE, but the freezing still happens during games, music, or videos. At the local hardware store, they asked similar questions—about indexing, power options, BIOS settings, and whether I should clone or reinstall the drives. They suggested replacing my SSD with a new one.

I ordered a fresh SSD yesterday, did a clean install of Windows 10 64-bit, updated all drivers, and followed the updates. A few hours later, the freezing resumed. I suspect the issue isn’t with the SSD itself since that was the last change, but rather something else. I checked temperatures: under load, CPU reached around 50°C, GPU stayed at a steady level, and the case temperature hovered between 37-42°C depending on the game. The GPU had been installed about two months prior, so I’m confident the problem isn’t with it.

My system specs include an Intel i7 3770K overclocked to 3.9GHz (installed early 2014), MoBo motherboard, a PSU, and several Kingston components: Hyper x Fury 16GB (2x8GB), Hyper x Savage 480GB (replaced mid-January), Asus sound card, Wi-Fi card, PCE-AC56, P8Z77-V, Intel Z77 LGA1155, and a Corsair 750W GPU. I’m pretty sure the GPU isn’t the cause, though I hope it’s not.

I’m still trying to find a firmware update for this SSD, as others reported issues with other Kingston models, but this one seems different. Overheating hasn’t been an issue, and I’ve confirmed temperatures stay within normal ranges.

PSU malfunction. Freezing indicates a defective power supply and a CPU with a 980 Ti is likely causing issues

It's a pleasure to hear that! For the 980Ti, you might want to consider upgrading to a more efficient PSU like the 80+20 or 90+20 models for better performance and power savings.

I’d choose the SeaSonic S12G 650W with a 5V power supply – just make sure to verify it without the SSD. If the issue disappears, return the SSD via RMA.

I previously had Windows on an HDD but never experienced a freeze until switching to an SSD. After returning an old SSD, I received this one yesterday with a fresh Windows 10 64-bit installation. Please review the entire post before responding. Thank you.

I was quite occupied, so I quickly went over it and moved past the second SSD section.

Is it worth engaging if you don’t have time to go through everything? You could try the PSU you have or ask someone else for a loan before spending on a new one.

You asked whether the driver updates came from the manufacturer's files or directly via Windows Update. The situation involved persistent issues that lasted months, despite changes in components except the power supply unit. After troubleshooting and verifying drivers again, it turned out the motherboard video drivers weren't fully compatible and there was an old BIOS configuration left over from a prior update. Clearing CMOS, resetting everything, updating drivers through Intel's platform, and rebooting resolved the problems completely.

I don’t have a suitable option nearby. I could check with others though. I want to upgrade my PSU but first figure out the issue. After setting up Windows and logging in, there were several automated updates—hard to recall which ones. Still, I installed the CD with the motherboard, which helped me install LAN, Chipset, Intel graphics, and audio drivers. I also used the CDs for the Wi-Fi card and ASUS Xonar DG sound card. The GPU drivers came directly from NVIDIA. I don’t remember anything else... I plan to review all the drivers again and update them from the manufacturer. Thanks for your help.

I understand how annoying these issues can be. Even though I’m familiar with PCs, small problems like driver conflicts often lead to instability and frustration. I’ve likely disassembled my system before and after upgrades, checking components and running diagnostics multiple times. When I finally found the root cause, it was satisfying. For your situation, start by removing any overclocking settings, ensuring BISO is up to date, verifying all motherboard drivers, and checking chipset versions. Also, inspect the BIOS for onboard GPU activity or the PCIe graphics card. If needed, consider replacing the graphics card and reinstalling drivers before putting it back in. This step-by-step approach can help isolate the problem. Good luck, and feel free to ask if you hit any snags along the way!
