You want to utilize an SSD as a cache drive for a basic mass storage server. I've attempted truNAS but couldn't set up a VM for Windows Server 2016. Any assistance would be very helpful.

How is the storage configuration? Do you have dedicated storage areas configured? What type of tasks are you handling? Tiered storage spaces is likely the optimal approach for this in 2016, though it comes with constraints and introduces a single point of risk.
