While playing games on your computer, the FPS remains stable when switching between low and high settings most of the time. It often stays near 60 frames per second since you're using a 60Hz monitor. On some games, if your PC runs below 60fps, the frame rate doesn't change much regardless of settings. This suggests your CPU might be the limiting factor. I would expect adjusting the GPU would impact performance more noticeably.

if you want to test for bottlenecks, i would use either an overlay (msi afterburner + rivatuner) or monitor your CPU / GPU usages while playing. what game is this? and your setup?

Ensure Vsync is disabled when checking FPS. It locks your frame rate to your monitor's refresh rate. For instance, a 60Hz screen usually uses 0, 5, 15, 30, 45, or 60 FPS. If your GPU can reach 37 FPS in reality, Vsync on will cap it at 30. My setup handles Rocket League up to nearly 250FPS at full resolution. With Vsync on, performance drops to 60, matching my display's limit.

I'll attempt the edit: turning off VSync in my current game won't affect anything.

I'm sure I have an A10-6700 APU with 12GB of RAM. I recently upgraded to an RX 460. Previously, adjusting graphics settings made a big difference in game performance. Now the settings barely impact frame rates. I also watch my content on a 1080p TV.

It would be useful to share your specifications so we can identify potential issues from a distance. As another suggestion, try using any app that tracks CPU or GPU usage (press Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and observe if one component is consistently at 100% while the other remains low. For instance, if your CPU stays at full capacity while your GPU only runs at 30%, your CPU might be the limiting factor. Each scenario is unique, so your exact details will help us pinpoint the problem.

It seems you want to verify performance settings first. Check that games aren’t restricting FPS or enabling V-Sync. Use tools like Afterburner to monitor CPU and GPU load during play. If CPU cores exceed 90% usage while GPU stays under 80%, a CPU bottleneck is likely. Usually, lowering resolution or frame rate without improvement indicates the issue is on the CPU.
