Splitter PCIe for connecting multiple devices.
Splitter PCIe for connecting multiple devices.
Hey, do you know if it's possible to fit a 1 Gen 3 PCIe x16 slot into two 8 slots without using a motherboard split? Also, what's the cost around $50 USD for that setup? Let me know!
Without branching you'd have to rely on a PCI-E switch card, though it adds delay.
We're discussing the level of delay involved, especially when it doesn't affect everyday tasks like encoding for Plex. It won't be noticeable during gaming or similar activities, but I'm considering streaming games in the future.
I haven't really explored USB NICs yet, though I might consider a 10 gig one later for a proxmox cluster with ceph shared storage. I'll take a look. It could help with Plex and maybe serve as a small workstation, and I intend to use it as a proxmox node too—so it'll be useful for many things.
I have access to various GPUs, and I managed to acquire five from a small business storage. However, I’m interested in constructing a powerful Proxmox cluster inside a compact 10-inch rack. Since I already have a 14U unit, it would be great to utilize it without spending much.
It would be simpler and more affordable to use an M.2 PCIe x1-x4 adapter board and run the network card through this slot. You can find options on eBay such as the one with Molex power connector and another with SATA power connector. Pair it with a PCIe x1 or x4 riser cable to place an Ethernet card anywhere. The power cable is required to supply 12V into the PCIe x4 port, since the M.2 connector provides only 3.3V. One version combines the riser cable with the adapter, but it supports only PCIe x1 (suitable for a 5Gbps Ethernet card). A different model offers PCIe x1 support but needs 12V from the power source, which is only necessary if you want USB functionality. Without knowing your motherboard, I can't give more specific advice.
Sure, I'll take a look. Since you don't have a motherboard yet, things are quite adaptable.
