Hey! Here’s a concise summary: I’ve been using this setup for 4 years—AMD Ryzen 5 3600 GTX 1660 Super with 16GB RAM at 3200MT/s. I’m planning to upgrade to either the Ryzen 7 5800 or 7 5700X3D without changing my motherboard. Right now I have a 1080p/144Hz display and want to move to 1440p/144Hz. With a 300€ budget, which GPU makes the best upgrade? 3060, 3060 Ti, or 4060? Also considering AMD equivalents. I’m not sure much and feel a bit lost on new tech. Thanks for any help!

The 5700X3D is clearly the superior CPU choice among the two you referred to for gaming. For top-tier performance with ray tracing, an Nvidia graphics card would be the better option. However, ray tracing on a 3060 or 4060 works adequately... just not great.

A solid AMD alternative would be the RX 7600 XT, which delivers significantly better performance for its price compared to other options. It comes at a higher cost of 330 euros for the most affordable model. The 4060 isn't worth it because its performance doesn't justify its price, and the RTX 3060/3060 Ti are no longer available. You might consider a used 6750 XT for improved results, though AMD cards generally lag in ray tracing. A used 3070 would be a better choice—it excels in ray tracing and supports 1440p. The 4060 or 3060/3060 Ti aren't suited for 1440p gaming, so avoid them if you plan to upgrade. For the CPU, the 5700X3D is the top pick due to its x3D cache boosting frame rates. The 5800X could be better if you also need to handle productivity tasks.

Smart choice for the 5700X3D. I’d make that too. For the GPU, I’d consider the 6750XT—around 330 Euro in Germany, for instance. Not sure about your location or where you shop. It’s quicker than the 7600XT or the Nvidia options you mentioned. I’d prefer AMD over Nvidia in the 300 series, thanks to more VRAM and better performance (besides ray tracing).

A refurbished 3070 matches the 6750 XT in performance, especially for ray tracing. The choice comes down to whether you need a used GPU or prefer a new one. If you don’t need a used one, opt for the 6750 XT.

Thanks a lot! I'm choosing the 5700X3D and will look at the GPU later. Perhaps I can upgrade to something higher with a 3070 if the budget allows.

The price of a used 3070 varies depending on your location. Could you please share your area or city?

Another thought for everyone... Should we upgrade the Ryzen 5 3600 or the GTX 1660 Super? Or would it make more sense to pair the Ryzen 5 3600 with an RTX 3070, or the RTX 4060, or the Ryzen 7 5700X3D with a GTX 1660 Super? Thanks to whoever replies!

The older GPU is less powerful compared to its peers. The 3600 can handle a decent 3070, but a 5700x3d won't bring the 1660 up. Still, for a budget of 300, consider a newer 6750xt or a used 6800. I didn’t mind the 3xx Nvidia models with their power spikes and lack of RTX, but if you’re after Nvidia, go for it—just avoid the 4060!
