Here in the UK the internet isn't fast where I live (though still decent) so my connection gives about 60mbps when downloading games or updates on my Xbox Series S. But when I try to download something on my PC or through Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the Xbox app/Microsoft Store, the speed stays around 7mbps all the time. It doesn’t seem like my CPU is struggling either (it’s a 5600) and should handle at least 30mbps for downloading. The odd thing is it only slows down when launching games, not while downloading. I ran a speed test and everything looked okay—sometimes even better than the console at times (60-65 downloads, 20 or 15 uploads). But I’ve tried several Ethernet cables (around three) and they all give the rated 50-55mbps on the console. So the issue isn’t with the PC itself. How can you fix this? And is this just because consoles handle decompression differently from PCs because of their hardware and software? EDIT: My Fortnite download speed dropped a bit recently.

Each launcher faces its own server challenges. Steam usually performs better compared to Epic and Microsoft Store, which tend to lag. Factors like the time of day, high user activity during updates, or your ISP's bandwidth restrictions can also impact performance.

That's a good observation. I wasn't considering it before. Should we really lower it that much?

It seems the numbers might differ due to unit conversions: Epic, Steam, etc. show downloads in MB/s while the internet speed is listed in Mbps. Internet speed is shown as megabits per second, and each bit equals 8 bits per byte.

Yep. For example right now I'm seeing 10-20 MB/s on Epic, which was consistent for about ten minutes, then it spiked to high speed reaching up to 65 MB/s. On Steam I usually get 100-120, and the few times I had to visit the Microsoft Store it's been around 30-40.

The issue appears on my Xbox, showing 50 megabytes per second instead of bits. It seems the update speed was limited by the launcher, not reaching high performance—typically it stays around 6 or 5 Mb/s. Steam performs a bit better at 8 Mb/s.
