Speed details
With a 100 Mbps connection, you can expect faster downloads than typical speeds. For example, if you're using Steam and seeing 10–12 MB/s, that's quite solid. Your friend’s 50–60 MB/s might be due to different network conditions or the game’s performance.

Speed references often differ between Mbps and MB/s. Mbps stands for Megabits per Second while MB/s represents Mega Bytes per Second. Since there are 8 bits in a byte, a 100 Mbps connection translates to roughly 12 MB/s. You can adjust this setting in Steam under the download options.
Your connection supports up to 72MB per second, but you're currently limited to 500MB.
Transfer rate is typically expressed in bits, yet steam records it in bytes, maybe because they aim for clarity so users can grasp it, as storage units are counted in bytes. Their game files are therefore sized in bytes.
Steam displays usage in megabytes per second by default. 72MB/s equals 576Mbps, which is slightly higher than your current rate but still within normal ranges. As @Skiiwee29 noted, you can adjust the display to show in bits per second. This change reflects the fact that storage is measured in bytes and data transfer in bits—data travels as a 1 or 0, with each byte containing 8 bits.
