Hi. I'm trying to resolve an issue with my Archer VR900 V2 DSL modem/router. It's currently running in Wireless Router Mode with WAN connected to port 1, linked to a modem. My internet speed fluctuates between 500Mbit/s and drops to 260-300Mbit/s. After two days, the speed consistently falls to lower ranges. I've restarted it and left it unplugged for a few minutes without improvement. Only using Factory Default Restore helps temporarily, but it repeats after about two days. When I disconnect the router's LAN cable from the modem and connect my computer to the same port, I get 496Mbit/s speeds. It seems the modem itself isn't the problem. I've replaced the thermal pads, thinking overheating might be the cause, but they didn't make a difference. The pads were Arctic Thermal Pad 10 x 10 x 3.5 mm thick before assembly and initially made good contact with the heat spreader. What further steps can I take to fix this? Thanks.

Checked if the firmware was refreshed. Noted that resetting the router often restores functionality, at least until further issues appear.

The router might not be working properly. It could be time to consider replacing it.

However, this doesn't seem logical. If it were hardware-based, a basic restart would at least provide temporary relief. I've been able to reboot it five times without success. After performing the Factory Default Restore, the router restarts using default settings and resolves the issue for two days. I suspect the problem lies in software. I'll attempt to flash previous firmware if possible.

Yes, the router is from 2017 and TP Link probably doesn’t prioritize it. Consequently, they may never address the software problem. They faced issues with a DLink router once and stopped supporting it. Eventually, they switched to DDWRT on the router, which resolved the problems temporarily. The downside of DDWRT is that it’s quite difficult to set up. There are many third-party firmwares available, but each one must also be compatible with the device. You might want to explore that route, though I doubt they’ll succeed.

Thank you for your assistance. I shared this on the TP-Link Support forum as well. I'll check if anyone has ideas. I searched for OpenWRT and DDWRT but found no support for devices with built-in DSL modems.

Completed a test with these steps:
1. Backed up the configuration to a file.
2. Ran Factory Default Restore and tested speed – ~497Mbit down / ~450Mbit up.
3. Restored the configuration file and tested again – ~260Mbit down / ~260Mbit up.
4. Performed another Factory Default Restore, speed returned to normal.
Overall, issues are resolved by saving in the configuration file.

What is the brand and model of the ISP fiber unit? Did you measure your speeds by connecting directly to the VR900 or via wireless?
