I recently encountered issues with my Gigabyte GA-M51GM motherboard. Any soundcard installation leads to significant lag, rendering the system non-functional. This began after replacing the cooler for the GeForce 6800 graphics card, which required removing the existing Ensoniq sound card due to compatibility problems. Using the built-in audio or a PCI Sound Blaster causes severe stuttering on the GPU, likely because it’s competing for PCIe x16 bandwidth. Overclocking might be the culprit. I’m unsure how many IDE devices I’ve connected, but the system runs smoothly without audio devices yet becomes unusable with any soundcard present. It doesn’t seem driver-related since the problem occurs with multiple cards.

try running 16-bit programs on an RTX 4090, see how that goes. There's a reason I keep this around

I understand. 16-bit code is outdated now. It doesn't work with today's processors. Wishing you success.

I used Core 2 Extreme and an Intel DP45SG board a while back. The system performed well under load but had trouble with newer programs and OSes. If I ever need to run old software, I’d probably rebuild it myself. I’m sure I’d run into hardware problems along the way.

The BIOS indicates that the built-in sound comes from the PCI bus of the chipset. Some past Nvidia discussions suggest this problem wasn't limited to the GeForce 6800 graphics card, leading to noticeable delay issues on certain systems.

The GPU resides on the northbridge, while the audio is handled by the south bridge (along with numerous other components). If it were stealing bandwidth, this should occur whenever USB devices, networking gear, or even hard drives are connected. All these components share the southbridge, and in the case of hard drives, they require significantly more data transfer than sound does.
