So, my screen went dark and I suspect the GPU is the issue (long story), so maybe it's time to swap it out soon. Generally, when this occurs, I just click Winkey+x and after the system restarts, things return to normal, but this is the first time the sound stopped working after a reboot. I believe I can resolve it using the standard Windows troubleshooter, but I'm curious—does the sound on desktops usually originate from the CPU, GPU, or motherboard? I don't have a dedicated sound card either. Also, which option should I choose to start the troubleshooter? I'm not sure what any of these are. Thanks.

sound issues when errors occur are unusual.
all devices connected to the motherboard run on the same chip. therefore, if the GPU fails, it can cause other components to malfunction too. i would replace the GPU sooner rather than later.
