3 years ago I had to decide between a 7700 and Ryzen 1600/1700. Now it's just the Ryzen 1600/1700, which is better. I had enough budget for a 7700 gaming-wise—it meets my expectations, stays under 100fps, and my monitor runs at 75Hz without needing an upgrade. Most cores still feel underpowered at idle. The higher cost of the 7700 made future upgrades harder, adding $130 to my investment.

Sure, the idea of something being "futureproof" often falls short when it comes to PC hardware.

I purchased the 1700 in 2017, and in 2019 I’m happy with it. I’m not sure about the upgrade route—my B350 and B450 boards are compatible with the latest models, so upgrading should be possible. The 100 FPS problem might relate to the GPU or settings; changing the chip could yield significant improvements.

It's an ASUS B350 F, performing fairly well above average for three years. Mostly, I think upgrading the CPU isn't necessary if you started with a 1600 or 1700.

You're confirming you completed Futureproof and believe you're still aligned with your personal goals for the long term.

This model works with Zen 2 (Ryzen 3xxx) processors, though a BIOS upgrade might be necessary to identify them. If you choose that route, ensure your BIOS is updated first.

In reality, yes—it was future-proof enough according to my expectations. I plan to upgrade the monitor first, then the GPU, but those steps haven’t been completed yet. If I have a 1600 in the first place, nothing should have changed.

You're questioning whether a 4-core processor is better than having two idle cores. Going with a 7.7GHz would limit your options since the socket design has changed—even though you own an i5 7600K.

Everything looks fine, the system is working perfectly. CPU usage stays around 20% most of the time, which means I’m the main constraint.
