Sophos vs pfsense
Sophos vs pfsense
You're aiming to set up VLANs and control bandwidth for each one. The free Sophos version likely won’t include these advanced features, so you might need a paid solution. PFSense could be a better fit if you want more comprehensive network management tools.
Sophos acts as a UTM, which is a firewall, while the alternative is a software router that handles traffic between networks. It's worth noting, it doesn't really matter which one you use unless your equipment supports VLANs or trunking; otherwise, you won't see much difference.
According to what I understand, Sophos handles routing as well. I might also adapt PfSense into a "UTM" setup if needed.
Both options are solid, though I personally prefer Sophos. If I had to choose, it would be Sophos.
Sophos provides two firewall options for home use at no cost—the UTM and the XG Home. The XG represents the newer "next-generation" model and includes nearly all the features you need at home, though it has some restrictions: 6GB RAM and 4 cores, with unlimited capacity for other components. The UTM offers 50 internal IP addresses and unlimited space for everything else. If you prefer a simpler setup without a graphical interface, VyOS is a great choice. It runs very lightly, functions as a switch, router, firewall, or even more, and it’s completely free.
