Sony Vegas - Is it good?
Hey everyone, I'm curious about Sony Vegas. It's currently on sale for around $131 on Steam. I've used Adobe AE and Premiere before, and I really appreciate the flexibility of AE—mostly limited only by creativity. How does Sony Vegas stack up? Is it suitable enough for starting a home video business? Any drawbacks? Also, do the people at Sony Pictures use Sony Vegas or Sony Movie Studio? Just to be clear, they say they use Windows Movie Maker.
I use it for every video I make alongside AE, especially for intros and outros, and I'm really satisfied. It's far superior to FCP6 and 7 that I'm currently using in school. If you plan to shoot in 4K, you'll need to export it in a different format (like .xmf or something starting with an x) and then process it with AME or Handbrake to convert to MP4.
It would be ranked as similar to 1. AE. It offers a broad range of editing tools and strong content creation capabilities.
Considering how costly those items are, I’ll begin with a smaller budget. Then I can invest the funds to purchase Adobe CS. Thanks for your feedback. Next year I should aim for Vegas Pro 13 via Steam after upgrading to 16GB RAM. Also, what do you think about video rendering performance in Sony Vegas? In AE it significantly slows down older systems I’ve tested. Does Vegas Pro offer GPU acceleration? Yes, with a CUDA GPU it runs much quicker—my GTX 660 performed impressively.
Uncertain if Vegas accepts my GPU for rendering (7950, too reluctant to verify), yet even then, while editing it boosts performance, it feels snappier. Export durations on my G3258 at 4.5GHz are nearly double what they were on my Q6600. Added note: it worked smoothly with 8GB RAM—though it used a significant portion. It performed better with 12GB.
AE is clearly better, though a bit intrusive Vegas comes in second.
Only about 4GB provides enough space for the video editing software at 720p. I have 8GB, which seems sufficient right now. I’ll make sure to update later if possible.
