Sometimes your sound on Skype or Zoom gets funny, and sometimes your video feels slow.
I have been having trouble with my Skype or Zoom calls lately. My internet is very fast, over 100 megabit down and about 11 up for years. Even on an old computer, things worked fine until recently. When my target had a bad connection, asking them to stop video helped solve the problems. I do public speaking at schools and clubs. Because of Covid, I mostly work from home, but using Zoom or Skype moving between cities has never been a problem before.
Recently, I bought a new computer with a fast processor and a good camera and mic, but now I get strange glitches in my calls that happen every few minutes. It takes about 45 seconds of bad audio, then 3 to 5 minutes of clear sound again. The Wave III microphone is great for clarity, but the glitch keeps happening. It only happens on my new machine; it never happens when I use an old laptop. To see the problem, I need a computer connected via Ethernet and another computer nearby. Testing just with OBS and Wavelink didn't help at all.
On my old laptop, showing PowerPoint full screen works fine. On my new setup, I want to use OBS so that while I show the video feed on the screen, I also share my slides from PowerPoint at the same time. I also like a lower third graphic added over my picture. The Wavelink app lets me mix music and YouTube audio with system sounds into the stream or monitor loop, but I can't control how much volume each has. The distortion seems unrelated to using those tools.
Question 1: How do I test this without connecting to another computer? So far, I keep changing settings and wait for a friend who will let me run a quick Skype meeting so I can try it out alone.
Question 2: Who knows why this is happening? The bad audio is very loud and stands out a lot against the clear sound from my new gear. This remote presentation setup is the main reason I built that new computer in the first place.
Check your system for new drivers so you can visit Intel to get the right CPU video drivers straight from them, not just the PC maker. There isn't a real test way without setting up another computer to try it out. Have you already talked to Zoom support? Are you using a virtual background? Those things might cause problems with some programs and video chips. Usually, trouble with videos or calls comes from the internet connection between your systems.
Hello! Thanks for getting back to me. Because the problem only happens when I am on the phone, I made several changes every time I tried something new. I updated my drivers for both Wave 3 and Windows 10. I'm not using the graphics card in my processor right now, but I do have a new ASUS RTX 3060 OC with updated drivers too. Right now, I don't use NVENC or AI noise reduction either. So far, testing directly through Zoom, Skype, or even OBS Studio doesn't seem to help much. The issue only happens when I am actually on a call right now.
I'm stuck trying to handle two separate probate cases in California and Texas at the same time. Sometimes, having my computer down is too expensive for me. My next step is to make another Skype account and try what you suggested to see if it still breaks. Usually, this happens within about 10 minutes of talking. I don't have good timing data because I can't take notes while on a real call; I just pay attention to the meeting instead.
I'm already in touch with Elgato and my internet provider. The problem hasn't happened when using only the webcam microphone (Logitech BRIO), but it seems linked to actual connections over the network. I've tried everything Elgato suggested, and the ISP wasn't very helpful. They just told me to buy a new router and upgrade my service.
I live alone, so I rarely have other devices online at once. I always used Ethernet for these calls before with my old slow laptop and modem/router setup. Maybe the faster 171 MB/s download speed and 1900 MHz motherboard are sensitive to this issue? This often happened when work had parts that were no longer available, but "drop-in replacement" parts would be faster yet cause new mysterious problems.
I am willing to buy a new router because my motherboard supports 2.5 Gigabit connections and the router is only 1 Gigabit. I really like the microphone, especially since it sounds great when there isn't any distortion. My friends recently told me they have "Radio Voice." Please ask your loved ones to make an estate plan for you!
