So I've boosted my i3 540 to 3.6 ghz without changing the voltage settings, out of fear it might fail. If I raise those voltages, will the temperatures drop or could the PSU fail? I also have a 550-watt system with a 9800 GT graphics card.

It might be possible to increase it even more, though voltage alone doesn't change temperatures.

If it's stable without changing voltage there;'s no need.
Upping voltage with a system that old may be risky, but usually it'd just shut down if errors occur. Temps wont go up though. That'd only happen when increasing clockspeed.

This may sound funny but I was just thinking of pushing it further xD
So CPU voltage doesn't help with temperatures?

We have confirmed the maximum safe voltage for this CPU?
Yes, it should not exceed 1.4 volts.
