I wasn't entirely confident, as I noticed games dropping into the mid-30s to low 40s at that setting.

This won't happen. With my 980ti and an Acer XB280HK, I can expect around 60fps during a good day playing Witcher and GTA Online. I'm really looking forward to hitting 80-90fps with anything under two titans, though I'd still be a bit doubtful.
