Someone believes my RTX 2060 is a 970?
Hello everyone. My system believes I’m running a 970, but I actually have a 2060 installed.
A friend lent me his old GIGABYTE RTX 2060.
I turned off my PC, removed the 970 GPU, and put in the 2060.
I mistakenly thought my PC and Windows would automatically recognize the new GPU and adjust settings accordingly.
At most, I’d need to update a driver or two, right?
Well, after about 11 hours of deleting drivers, downloading them, and trying a clean install (twice), the NVidia graphics driver kept showing up as 970, and I couldn’t find any compatible solution.
I’m running out of ideas and can’t locate any guidance for similar situations.
Could you assist me?
The main problem is that no matter what I do, my PC still thinks I have the 970.
Even after installing the NVidia driver 576.80 (which was supposed to help), my Device Manager lists NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 and shows a driver version of 32.0.15.7680.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Initially, this PSU appears to be of poor quality.
Additionally, have you checked if your motherboard BIOS requires an update? Use DDU in Safe Mode, delete all GPU drivers (Intel, AMD, Nvidia), and then install the most recent driver from Nvidia's support site in an elevated command—right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator. Consider using an older driver instead of the newest one.
This problem with a 1060 required a complete system reset since the drivers wouldn't remove properly using ddu. Ensure your Windows email is connected to your license for reactivation. Back up all files to a different drive. If you lack a USB with Windows 10 or need recovery steps, follow these instructions:
During the update process or restart, are there any unusual events in Event Viewer and Reliability History? This could indicate a failed driver installation, possibly due to a crash during shutdown or restart. It seems the system might revert to the base graphics driver temporarily when running DDU.
Gentleman, I’ve been let down. It seems a 970 is actually a 2060. I had to examine the code on the circuitry. The sticker with the model number is just a meaningless barcode. I was just trying to play Nightreign, lol. Thanks everyone.
