When attempting to use the built-in microphone on my laptop, I encounter severe background distortion in quiet environments. I also struggle to hear my voice during playback, even when speaking loudly. The only sounds that remain clear are intense claps directly in front of the webcam or tapping the top portion of the laptop. This problem appears across the Windows Camera app, Voice Recorder, and Audacity.

Device: HP Pavilion x360 14-ba150sa
Processor: Intel i5-8250u
RAM: 4GB DDR4
Graphics: Intel UHD 620
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
Help needed greatly appreciated.

Consider checking the laptop's microphone quality. Use another microphone to rule out software problems.

Functions perfectly with my Blue Snowball USB mic and Steelseries Siberia 200 headset (connects via 3.5mm jack). This device isn't just problematic—it's completely unusable.

Check mic reviews on YouTube to see what others say. If most work well, the issue likely lies with the poor quality of your own microphone.

It's challenging since there aren't many reviews available.

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but just wanted to post here as I just fixed this same issue on a customer's computer (model 14m-ba114dx). Basically, there are two rubber seals on the cam/mic board that sits just behind the screen. These have a small hole in them, but they can get off-center, therefore covering the microphones. It's just a matter of re-centering or removing these rubber bits, and it should fix the issue.

I created the account solely to express my gratitude for this useful advice. I successfully resolved the issue by adjusting the fitting with a needle, and now my microphone should sound clearer without excessive noise cancellation—or perhaps only slightly for the high frequencies.
