The Problem - A few of my Steam titles: Thief Gold, King's Quest (all), Space Quest (all), Quake II: Ground Zero & The Reckoning, and Gothic 1 (even though I can’t launch them, I can view the title screen). When I press play, they seem to suggest starting, but if they do, a short black screen appears before the crash. What I’ve done so far is checking the cache for each game; it shows “x files failed validation and will be reacquired,” but that doesn’t help. I’m aware some of these are available on GOG, and eventually I might get them.

System Specs: CPU – Intel Core i7-3770K (3.5GHz, 4 cores), Motherboard – Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB ATX, RAM – G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB), DDR3-1600, Storage – Sandisk Extreme 120GB SSD, HDD – Seagate Barracuda 2TB, Graphics – PowerColor Radeon HD 7970, Case – Cooler Master HAF X ATX, Power Supply – SeaSonic G 550W (80+ Gold), Optical Drive – Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS, OS – Windows 7 Ultimate Full (64-bit).

Checked the PCGamingWiki page for those titles. Known problems are usually listed there, often with solutions and additional tips for PC games across all age groups.

These versions previously functioned. A few classic titles still operate despite newer operating systems and graphics cards.

I've already tested them before, so something must have triggered the crashes. To avoid downloading from GOG, I need to reinstall Assassin's Creed II. The Ubisoft launcher is failing—error code 1.
