I've joined my college WiFi on my laptop and checked speeds on different sites. Results range from 200-400 mbps to as low as 1.5mbps. Speed tests from Ookla show varying outcomes, while Netflix's fast.com displays different numbers. My task manager confirms these fluctuations, even on regular websites. YouTube throttles but Netflix streaming stays stable. The Sophos firewall may be limiting all devices. On college computers, speeds reach up to 500mbps. I need higher bandwidth for cloud PC use via Shadow, which is also throttled. I've tested VPNs and proxies without success. They don't change the throttling. Would it help to route traffic through an unthrottled site or another workaround? Thanks for your assistance.

Have you experimented with another DNS like 1dot? It might not fix the problem, but it could help bypass some issues at work.

I've tested Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 along with Google's 8.8.8.8, and appreciated the recommendation.

It might relate to QoS or traffic prioritization features.

Ensure no internal resources are accessed. DNS does not influence download speed.

He’d need it only when watching YouTube videos... So he could always revert back. DNS itself doesn’t, but another DNS can work around some firewalls, which makes it worth trying. I’ve been researching, and this Sophos setup looks like a more sophisticated firewall than what I usually face. It’s really tough to get past. The fact that Netflix stays open while YouTube does is odd. Have you contacted the staff to find out why?

The firewall controls data flow through specific ports. DNS handles name resolution. Bypassing DNS filtering is possible only this way. It might be easy for the firewall to block 53/tcp/udp, preventing access.

I'm not sure yet, but it seems like there might be no solution right now. I think I should contact the IT team to see if I can get an exception for my device, though they probably won't. Either way, I'll investigate further and update the post if I understand the reason. Thanks for your help!
