Some Questions.
Hi there, I've been using this PC for about a year now and it's finally time to switch to a 144hz monitor (excited about it). I have a few questions though.
1. Do I really need to aim for 144fps? I mostly play R6 and usually sit at around 120fps on maximum settings, sometimes hitting 180 or dropping to 135, but I guess the average will be okay? I’m mainly focused on FPS for siege games, since the other titles I play (like GTA 5) aren’t competitive and don’t rely as much on frame rate.
2. If I do need to hit 144fps, what should I look for in terms of extra frames? Since siege games are CPU-intensive, I’m thinking about overclocking my CPU, GPU, or RAM. Would that help? Also, are there any good guides or videos you’d recommend? I’ve seen some that seem to go a bit fast and I’m not sure if they’re worth it.
Thanks in advance!
I mean, to get the best performance from a 144hz monitor, you should aim for 144fps. Do you want to or do you need that? If your monitor supports freesync (which most do), you can turn it on and it won't cause issues even if you end up with lower fps. To boost the frame rate, adding a second RAM stick and using dual-channel mode will help. You might see around a 10% improvement, though possibly more if your components allow it. Depending on your specs and cooling setup, you could get another 10% through overclocking.
In certain situations the Nvidia control panel restricts the display to 120Hz. Navigate to the Nvidia control panel via Display>Change resolution, where you can adjust the refresh rate.
Sure, you can definitely reduce some settings from Ultra High to just High. The changes won't make a big difference. Important adjustments include shadows, textures, MSAA (from 4x to 2x), and reflections. Avoid modifying AF (x16 is essential for a sharp image and doesn't significantly impact performance). Also, keep Geometry and Resolution off. You can also disable most post-processing effects such as DoF, Bloom, Blur, grain, Vignetting, Chromatic Aberration, and FXAA.
I haven’t reached 144 FPS after getting my monitor (just played AC:O and EFT), but the improvements are still very clear, particularly when free sync is turned on.
