On Windows 7 or 8, you can get a free upgrade during the initial year following its release, and it remains free indefinitely.

Microsoft claims it's the top choice, though we need more confirmation.

You can enhance your product for up to a year post-release, and purchasing it during that time is free of charge.

I’m really sure it’s the top choice, since you have a whole year to upgrade for free. I don’t think it’ll be available to everyone—especially those without a Windows license, because it wouldn’t make sense for them and Microsoft would lose money. (It’s a bit of a confusing situation for them.)

Windows 10 offers a free version to 7 out of 8 users if they refresh within a year post-release. Once updated, it remains yours.

It might transform your Windows 7/8 key into a Windows 10 version, especially if you later purchase a new motherboard running Windows 10. However, this could depend on the activation process and Microsoft's policies.

The upgrade is complimentary, though it’s limited to Apple devices only—what’s the point of caring then?

They are taking this action for several reasons:
-Windows 8 caused significant issues.
-Many users delay switching to a new operating system (sometimes more than a year).
-Necessity to ensure everyone uses the Windows Store for software sales and revenue.
-Improves their public image.
