Some likely simple doubts about home networks.

I’d keep running the telephone cable right now because faster speeds soon won’t need RJ45 connections coming into your home from the ISP. Any new setup would probably be fiber to the home. RJ45 has a range limit for Ethernet, which isn’t expected to be used by any provider for home entry.
Main wire runs from the telephone pole underground into the basement, then gets repaired (shown in picture) to reach the second floor. This is my modem for my area—most people get a standard one unless they upgrade to a better model available in AP. As you can see, it displays DSL, indicating the previous image was from two floors up. Another switch is in the basement, linked to a router two floors above, with cables extending back up two floors to the three-bedroom rooms using RJ45 sockets. There are many wires going up and down, which seems unnecessary. The pole outside the house is where the cable enters underground toward the basement. I didn’t realize it was this complicated... Enjoy.
I mentioned it was done "before my time" between 2007 and 2010 by folks who weren't tech-savvy (parents), so they didn’t really pay attention. It seems I’ll be setting up a new phone wire straight from the pole outside to the home router modem unless more people share their opinions about the best cable choice. Now I’m going to sleep, good night, and thanks for the chat.
It's a great idea to stay informed about what's happening. This project sounds exciting to watch develop!
Wow, that wiring setup in the first photo is clearly not very good, isn't it? If it's part of the connection coming into your home, it could definitely lead to many problems. You seem to have DSL, so you could use RJ45 cables, but you'd only need four out of the eight wires and would still have to use an RJ11 end. For now, stick with a phone cable. If the line is near high voltage equipment, investing in a shielded RJ45 might be a smart move to reduce noise and interference.
A thoughtful choice. You may uncover even more dangers ahead.
