Some final checks before setting up Windows 10
I'm really looking forward to Windows 10 and planned to set it up right after my vacation. But then I noticed some issues. About six months ago, I bought a new computer. The technician who assembled it for me (at least I picked the components) installed a non-licensed version of Windows 7. That wasn't enough. I made a Windows 8 installation disc and got it working. After many attempts to get it to work, I realized I couldn't install Windows 8.1 from the official store or updates because my activation method isn't supported. I didn't get upset—actually, I didn't care much. Then, when Windows 10 was released, they mentioned it could only be downloaded on Windows 7 or 8.1. In reality, the setup didn't work on my PC at all, but it did on my laptop with Windows 7 SP1. Someone told me that people using Windows 8 could still install it via a tool from Microsoft (Media Creation Tool). I intend to set this up on my laptop, but I'm uncertain about my old machine. That's why I have a few concerns: 1. Was the upgrade from Windows 8 to 10 as I mentioned being accurate? Just to confirm. 2. I'm confident Windows 10 will install without issues, but will it be activated or in trial mode? My main worry is whether the crack will become available soon. If the trial ends soon, I'd have to either purchase a license or reformat and reinstall 8—something I definitely don't want to do (I dislike losing data). 3. Will my data be at risk? I have three drives: a 128GB SSD for OS, apps, and docs; a 1TB HDD for media; and a 2TB HDD for games. I'm not too concerned about the last two, but I don't want to lose the first one. As I mentioned before, I hate losing data. Setting this up took a lot of time.
