Solving Quake 4 Mint 20 audio problems.
Solving Quake 4 Mint 20 audio problems.
Hello everyone. I still have an old copy of Quake 4 from when I bought it. It wasn’t always stable, so I just kept it stored away. Recently, I’ve been enjoying a "retro" gaming vibe and found the following to work well in Mint:
Quake 2
Quake 3
Doom 3
For Quake 4, I managed to run it using:
quake4-linux-1.4.2.x86.run
Once installed, I placed the required .pk4 files in the correct folder (/usr/local/games/quake4/q4base) and used the CD key that came with the game. The game launches and runs fine, except for characters not speaking when you approach them—this is crucial. All other sounds, like explosions, shots, monster screams, etc., work perfectly.
Doom 3 also functions flawlessly and uses the same id Tech 4 engine. Any suggestions? Thanks.
do you have several sound cards? most pcs do try changing plughw:0 to plughw:1 or 2 and so on until it works with the right sound card
verify presence of quake4/base/zpak_english.pk4 in base game folder
Thank you for your message.
The Quake4 package does not install the correct English .pk4 files. I found a ~65MB zpak_english.pk4 file on my original DVD and moved it to /usr/local/games/quake4/q4base. Now characters respond when I approach them.
Great job and thank you again.
