After the release of Horizon Zero Dawn, I became aware of how weak my GPU is (Gigabyte 970 G1) and decided to try overclocking. I discovered that under stress testing, my GPU becomes extremely hot until the maximum temperature is reached. Even when I enabled the Power/Temp link and increased the headroom up to 90°C, it still managed to handle it. This was without altering any other settings.

I also noticed a rise in core clock (35-40 MHz) when I raised the temperature threshold. Is this typical? I’m sorry if this has been answered multiple times before, but I’m having trouble finding information about a GPU running so hot without overclocking.

As an older 970 model, it might require thorough cleaning of the fans and cooler, and possibly replacing the thermal paste. Proper case ventilation and maintaining a stable room temperature are also important.
