Hey there. You're dealing with an old laptop and Solus OS Budgie without enough space for Windows. Your GParted disk is shared—good luck with the installation!

You would shrink the current partition, create a fresh one using NTFS, and note that Windows will remove your bootloader—consider obtaining a boot manager instead.

The system blocks further reduction of the /dev/sda/3 partition. A boot manager is software that helps start up the operating system.

It's not possible to reduce the size of ext4 when it's already mounted, so you must start with a live system and then resize it.

You should first access the boot disk through Solus OS and then proceed to reduce its size accordingly.

3. Create a backup.
4. Reduce partition size.
5. Set up Windows and wait for the boot process to succeed, otherwise install GRUB.

I don’t need to worry about saving data on Linux; this is just for my dad who doesn’t like it. After shrinking the partition, would I return to BIOS and load the hard drive again? And if the bootloads aren’t working, how would I set up GRUB?

If you ignore Linux, simply erase it and set up Windows instead, dual booting might become tricky.

Alternatively, clean the drive, create two partitions, and enable dual booting. Or set up Windows alone if you don’t require a Linux environment.

Yes, you can simply install Windows, turn it on, and erase the storage drive.
