I'm checking if running Avira scan while Chrome and Snagit are open is too much. I was thinking about software to disable unnecessary programs so I don't accidentally turn off important ones. For example, can I stop using Window Explorer after four years?

It's not the startup speed I'm concerned about; it's how quickly files open and run, especially programs like AutoCAD and PDFs. They now take much longer and sometimes freeze when trying to unzip them.

I completed it last month but will attempt it again after my Avira scan.

As I continue reading this discussion, it’s hard to pinpoint the main issue. The likely causes usually involve: excessive software usage leading to resource conflicts between programs or drivers. Running two antivirus programs on one computer is a common scenario. There might be malware that your existing antivirus can’t detect, or possibly some poorly designed software. Hardware issues are also possible—checking storage devices is important because failing drives can cause system freezes. Also, it’s wise to back up important files. Since a malware infection isn’t entirely ruled out, using a USB drive for backups could be a safer option if you run a full scan with Windows Defender and see no results.

This is when things become extremely risky.
You can't simply 'shut off' Windows Explorer.
It's a key part of a Windows operating system.
You're moving toward destroying your OS, without actually identifying or resolving the issue.

I own an internal hard drive dedicated to backups that's completely full, and a warning message frequently appears about the storage being full. Even though this isn't my main drive, could it still be affecting performance?

I purchased two thumb drives from Amazon around the same time my computer began slowing down. Both were generic and of poor quality, eventually being discarded. Has anyone experienced thumb drives being sold with viruses? When I revisited Amazon to search for the thumb drive page, it had been removed. At that moment, I wondered if such a drive could be infected.

You're asking about the full parts list, but your system is outdated and unstable. I've updated it with a new graphics card and cleaned up old drives using DDU. I've also installed fresh SSDs and external drive software for backups. Malwarebytes and Avira are still running, though my PDF performance remains slow. The tools you're using include AutoCAD, PDF Acrobat, Word, Excel, Snagit, mouse without borders, and an Epson scanner/printer.

Parts list includes CPU, RAM, GPU, what drives, etc. Basically, everything. Items such as AutoCAD will operate very slowly on low-quality hardware. However, even with high-end equipment, if performance remains sluggish, the issue might lie with the software.
